ANTICH Vermut de Barcelona Blanco

Size

Nowadays marketed by the fantastic Cava house, Vallformosa, Antich is an ‘antique’ Vermut label established in Barcelona in 1850. Anton Antich originated this brand in Barcelona’s ‘Poble Nou’ suburb and six generations of his family have preserved it since. The base wine is organic Macabeo from Penedes, grown for Antich by Vallformosa, and it’s given some oxidative pre‐aging, before the macerated herb, plant and spice extract is added (there are 37 aromats in total) to harmonise sweetness, acidity and bitterness. Principal aromatising
inputs include: wormwood, thyme, cinnamon, gentian, bitter orange, vanilla and nutmeg.
It’s organic and vegan, with 6 g/l TA and 140 g/l residual sugar.

Elderflower, white fruit, almost jasmine‐punchy white florals and pastry characters. Orange bitters, honey, cinnamon, vanilla and thyme are evident, with a subtle back note of nutmeg. Aromatisation has not robbed the wine of its primary white wine‐ness, and it drinks very well straight up. In the mouth, white wine characters yield to praline sweetness and a refreshing tuck of bitter/tart to finish. It’s full and round with excellent texture and a terrific
interplay between chewiness and flow.
