Ribeiro (Arnoia Valley)

Formigo Treixadura blend 2024

Size

The best wines of DO Ribeiro tend to favour Treixadura as the forefront of a blend. Treixadura is naturally savoury, with a relaxed carriage and textural delicacy. It transmits the terroir flavour of the local granite faithfully. However, it is a little muted aromatically and profits from blending in aroma via varieties like Godello, Albariño and the local Lado. A caveat here: many ‘Industrial’ Ribeiro wines use trick acids and fake aromatic yeasts etcetera to lift the nose – nearly universally horrid wines! A good, typical Ribeiro white based on Treixadura will be golden, rounded, relatively savoury, with a sandy-steely mineral core and some silky-peachy fruitfulness. There’s a typical waxflower herbal character, and the best wines flow from roundness out to a textural finish threading mineral, acid and herbal elements.

Treixadura words: peachy-earthy, tilled herb, fresh white mineral
White floral, peach, honey pollen, green herb, savoury hedge/waxflower, granite fresh, mineral, savoury weight, steely, saline-sapid, golden sand … earthen acid – at once flavoursome and textural.
