Can' Leandro, D.O. Valencia

Can' (pronounced cahn), or house, more-or-less indicates a small family farm. Leandro is the project of young winemaker Gabriel Sanchis, and is named for his grandfather. Back in the day, Leandro used to work with the local Merseguera and Bonicaire varieties, but as with so much else during the qualitative decline of the 20th century, interesting local varieties fell by the wayside. Gabriel is bringing history back, saving the remnant old vineyards of indigenous varieties.

Can' Leandro is near Ontinyet - a municipal centre in the south of Valencia, inland and heading up into the hills which divide Valencia from DO Alicante further south. Ontinyet is above the valley of Rio Clariano, a tributary of which, 'Barranc de Morera' runs along the base of the Bonicaire and Merseguera vineyards. This stream provides subterranean moisture reserves in summer, and makes for a fresher micro-climate. Can' Leandro is only a few minutes east along the same hill flank as star producer Celler del Roure.
