Announcing TSA's new Patxaran

Meet our new Patxaran, from Hijos de Pablo Esparza Basarana.

Hijos de Pablo Esparaza was founded in 1872 by the Esparaza family. Five generations later, the family business continues to focus on small batch distillation of quality ingredients, a laborious production method which gives the final product remarkable levels of flavour, colour and smoothness.

Meet the Maker - Jurgen Wagner from Celler Capcanes visits Australia

The wines of Alicante

Alicante is the driest Spanish wine region, with 300mm or so rainfall per year. The winters are short and the summers are long, hot and nearly rainless. High altitude, however, with its dramatic diurnal temperature range, facilitates retention of acidity and the ability to maintain relative delicacy, definition and finesse.

We've just launched a bunch of great new gear. As well as new Galician and Mallorcan producers, we have a number of new reds, two new Sherry producers to entice and a fabulous new Madeira producer.

TSA invites you to Blood is thicker than Water, a Melbourne Food and Wine Festival Event

Scott had an idea ... a killer idea. He had long wanted to do a 'blood crawl', checking out the various restaurants in Melbourne serving some sort of Morcilla, or blood pudding variant ... but it always seemed that only one or two at a time were serving. So, instead he asked the McConnell brothers to collaborate with him in creating a menu of blood tapas to pair with various 'blood'n'roses' examples of the wonderful Mencia red grape from Galicia. Now it's a Melbourne Food & Wine Festival event. Read on, and book in!!!

Introducing Telmo Rodriguez Lanzaga 2009 $66.
If you believe Rioja can be a place, not a process, then this is the wine for you!

Here it is, fresh off the boat and looking like a gem already. Having tasted this wine in the Lanciego cellar twice over the past couple of years, I cannot tell you the glee with which I unpacked Lanzaga 2009 from container last week, nor the joy at how well it has travelled ... As of today, we have retired the last stocks of Lanzaga 2008 to our cellar and announce the launch of Lanzaga 2009.

We are delighted to announce the return of Rosita Cervesa – a real premium 'pale ale' style artisan beer from south of Barcelona. Not too fruity and certainly not too hoppy! Nothing like being punched in the face with a bowl of flowers, just very lovely, tasty beer!

We are delighted to introduce you to another fabulous Mencia producer - Meet Pedro Guimaro.

Pedro Perez, Guimaro's owner-maker (known as Pedro Guimaro by the locals) retired from legal practice in 2000 to take over the family business. The result? What we think to be the best producer in Ribeira Sacra. The wines are wild and free - pure expressions of the steep countryside.

We are delighted, after long consultation and much tasting, to release “the best cheap Mencia imaginable” …

Meet Godelia ‘Viernes’ Mencia 2011

TSA is delighted to announce the acquisition of a fantastic traditional Rioja producer, CUNE! Founded 1879 by the Real de Asua brothers of Bilbao, C.V.N.E has been an integral part of the Rioja region’s ascendance in the fine wine world.

It seems the kids in the Douro are all agog and have gone and done a very good thing! 2011 Vintage Ports are hot news. We are pleased to announce 'en primeur' offerings from three of the very finest, detailed and terroir-driven Estates of Quinta do Vale Dona Maria, Quinta do Vale Meão.

We are pleased to announce several delicious new release Cavas, several of which are no longer calling themselves Cava … (re-)introducing Raventos i Blanc, DO Conca del Riu de Anoia.
CAVA or not, there’s no question that these are outstanding value and delicious fizzes.

INVITATION TO LUNCH WITH BODEGAS RODA AT THE COMMONER - Melbourne Food and Wine Festival 9 + 10 March

Bodegas Roda are bringing the earthy delights of up-country Rioja to the table in celebration of this year’s Melbourne Food and Wine Festival theme: ‘Earth’. From freshly killed and foraged, to pickled and preserved, the best of multi-seasonal Victorian produce is laid on a slow, open table and augmented plentifully with very fine Spanish red wine. A delightful long, shared lunch is graced with the range of glorious Roda red wines: Sela, Roda, Roda 1 and the $500 deluxe wine, Cirsion.

Bodegas Roda in Rioja will soon be celebrating its 25th anniversary, and TSA is excited about securing some of their very special and extremely limited back vintage 4-packs. Each beautifully presented gift box contains 2 bottles of Roda 1 2004 + 2 bottles of Roda 1 2005. As one can only expect from this historic and renowned producer, these wines are utterly delicious.

Our existing range of Portugal’s most elegant tawnies, the bottlings of Vallado’s 10 and 20 year old tawny ports are now joined by their elders and a special super-elder ... we are excited to soon be releasing Vallado tawny port 30 year old and 40 year old, both 500ml. Even greater news is that these beauties are joined by Valladao 'Colheita' 1866 single vintage tawny. This port is a roughly 150 year old tribute to Dona Adelaide Ferreira, ancestor of Vallado.

Haro, October 2012 - Bodegas RODA has been selected as one of the 100 best wineries in the world, participating in the “Wine & Spirits Top 100 Tasting Event”, which honours the 100 best wineries of 2012.

The ninth annual “Wine & Spirits Top 100 Tasting Event” took place in San Francisco on October 17thand guests had the opportunity to taste products and learn about the 100 wineries selected. Local craft specialties were served.

This year we’ve launched a heap of new goodies, with a focus on high quality PLUS good value entry level wines, and we’re delighted to announce another winner.

TSA ANNOUNCES A NEW PRIORAT GARNACHA, 2011 Agnes de Cervera 'La Petite Agnes'

Our ongoing research work in Spain and at the tasting bench has been particularly fruitful this year, with a number of outstanding quality+value new releases. Here’s another. As you may recall, we did not like and did not ship this year’s release of Giné Giné Priorat. Instead, we have found an even better value entry Garnacha wine to show off the berry’n’smoke delights of Priorat. ‘Agnes’ is delicious, typical and ripping value. (I’ve already banned myself from taking her home, she’s too attractive and way too easy )…

CASTRO MARTIN 2010 ALBARINO scores 95 points in Decanter London tasting

We take this opportunity to congratulate Andrew & Angela on their recent success ... the Castro Martin Family Estate wine came out at the top of a Decanter London tasting of no less than 74 albariños in their August issue. It received 95 points, which falls into their “outstanding” category.

TSA new acquisition release: EBANO - meet our bargain-priced quality new Ribera del Duero tinto fino

Ébano is a property owned by esteemed Rías Baixas producer, Valmiñor. We have been working closely with them over a number of years on developing this wine, and have been very happy with their results from 2008 onward.

2010 Ébano 6 Tinto Fino is typicity, typicity, typicity … Dark cherry and spiced plum fruits in a leathery-earthy-mineral nose, with a lovely dark ground anisey spice accompaniment. It’s open and gentle, regional and varietal, not fruity, not oaky, and with that special sense of ‘line’ which characterises the super-duper 2010 vintage. No raw edges, it’s equal parts groovy, succulent cherry fruit, savoury, earth and mineral. Great bang for buck, stylish, regional and varietal. Made from 100% local family Tempranillo, the Tinto Fino of Ribera del Duero and aged 6 months in French barriques after fermentation temperature-controlled in stainless steel.

ANNOUNCING ROMATE'S NEW 'LOST FINO' - Fino Perdido, 750ml screwcapped

This is an 8 yo fino-amontillado from a solera of just 15 butts.Perdido refers to the ‘lost style’ of fino since the advent of modern technology. Keep in mind, manzanilla and fino as we know it are technological styles only possible since the 60’s; prior to that, all ‘finos’ would have been somewhat like this – a light more oxidative colour pick-up, a little brassier. As well as ‘over-aged’ to approximate wines of the past, Perdido is very lightly filtered and as close to a ‘fino en rama’ (raw, ex barrel) as is possible.

Romate Fino ‘Marismeño’ (new in 375ml screwcapped bottles)
Water white and shiney-bright, it’s steely, crisp, stoney and very dry. The ultra-fine palate both feels and tastes like a suck on a river pebble, finishing with a gentle pucker of bitter herb akin to extract of chamomile.

Sherry is an Anglicisation of Jerez, the central town in the south-west corner of Spain. In it’s time it has been invaded by Ottomans, Romans, Huns and the Moors. While these left some splendid architectural traces and pretty ceramic tile work, 400 years or British merchant dominance has celebrated, entrenched and refined the production of the diverse group of lightly fortified wines which today we call “sherry”.

Sherries come in sweet and dry, rich and elegant styles. They’re made from both brown and predominantly white grapes. But what they all share is an extended period of barrel maturation (4 years minimum for decent wines) in a solera system, and fortification with three or more degrees of clean, neutral alcohol.

INTRODUCING THE BEST OF BIERZO & PRIORAT: Launching 2009 DJP Bierzo Mencias & 2009 Alvaro Palacios Priorats

We are delighted to offer the outstanding quality 2009 vintage premium and deluxe selections (rested in our warehouse and ready to go) from Alvaro Palacios, Priorat’s finest producer. In conjunction with his nephew Ricardo Perez Palacios, Alvaro is also responsible for the definitive Bierzo Mencia property, DJP (Descendientes de Jose Palacios).

ANNOUNCING: A brand new BARGAIN, Ribera del Duero Tempranillo Ébano 6

We are truly delighted to introduce our newest acquisition, meet … 2010 Ébano 6 Tinto Fino RRP $29

Ébano is a property owned by esteemed Rias Baixas producer, Valmiñor. We have been working closely with them over a number of years on developing this wine, and have been very happy with their results from 2008 onward. Our first chance to ship and introduce to the TSA portfolio coincides with the launch of the 2010 vintage.

ANNOUNCING A NEW ACQUISITION: Peter Sisseck's Bodegas y Vinedos 'PSI'

We are DELIGHTED to announce a new acquisition. A truly masterful expression of Ribera del Duero, and a steal in price-quality terms. Meet 'PSI'!

'PSI' is the brainchild of Peter Sisseck, founder of Dominio de Pingus. The idea is to utilise some neglected, but potentially great old assets, human and vinous, of Ribera del Deuro. In conjunction with Pablo Rubio (winemaker for Peter at Dominio de Pingus and Quinta Sardonia), Peter has re-fashioned the viticulture of these old vines, and rejuvenated the old guys’ relationship with their beloved gnarled old plots. PSI is biodynamic Tinto del Pais (local clone Tempranillo) from old bush-vine plots at around 900m altitude in the valleys of Gromejón and Perales.

INTRODUCING A NEW ACQUISITION: 'Antidoto', a terrific new Ribera del Duero

We are delighted to announce a new acquisition, and one which completes a significant re-working of our collection from Ribera del Duero. We are very pleased to introduce you to Hernando y Sourdais 'Antidoto' Tempranillo.

'Antidoto' is the first release of a new venture, ‘Hernando y Sourdais’ headed up by winemaker Bertrand Sourdais, who has a parallel existence as owner-maker of a Chinon property in the Loire Valley (Domaine de Pallus). Bertrand has for a number of years been a noted winemaker in Ribera del Duero, having been responsible for Dominio de Atuata (currently a bit Parkery for us, but there you go). We are talking the little-known Eastern sector of Ribera del Duero, which is dry, cold and very remote, known as Soria, a sub-region named after its main town. Bertrand’s project is based in a little village called San Esteban de Gormaz, and is working with pre-phylloxera vines from antique vineyards (2000 years’ heritage) organically grown at up to 1000m above sea level.

At TSA we’re continually at work behind the scenes researching new projects; new aspects of the Iberian grog scene. We have not ‘done it all’ as yet, and have been very deliberate in not trying to do it all at once. We’re genuinely committed to researching deeply and carefully so that we can truthfully present our wines as the best of their type, not just ‘some product we have found’. We taste hundreds (and hundreds) of wines a year, in Spain and in the office, attempting to find genuine gems, real wines that tell the best stories possible of type and place. Of late, a few such have indeed been found …

INTRODUCING A NEW ACQUISITION: Ron Ingenio Manacas Extra Añejo from Sanchez Romate

We are delighted to admit a new fellow to the TSA graduate program. Our latest acquisition is a Caribbean Rum brought to us by esteemed sherry house, Sanchez Romate.

Meet “Ron Ingenio Manacas Extra Añejo” (‘Ron’ being latin for Rum, not some mustachioed 70s relic), a premium sippin’, mixin’, cocktailin’ blend of Caribbean rums. Caribbean Rum from Jerez?? Curious, eh? It’s a blend of rums from Dominica, Venezuela and Panama, aged for 5 years in the Caribbean in bourbon oak, then a further 3 years in Jerez in used Romate Amontillado and Oloroso Sherry butts.

For some time we have wanted to introduce a new Cava brand to our portfolio. Exhaustively, we have tasted every available sub-premium-priced Cava in the Spanish market. In 3 separate full D.O. tastings here and another in situ in Penedes, the Cavas from Torreblanca have topped the tasting each time; and each time with an identical tasting note! A wine with real identity, consistency, great value and delicious … we believe this very much fits the bill, and have now added Torreblanca to our list (having first spent the past 6 months helping develop new labels and packaging, so they look as smart as they taste).

NEW RELEASE: 2009 Telmo Rodriguez 'Mountain Blanco' Dry Moscatel

In the late 90s Telmo and Pablo went into the schist-soiled mountains above Malaga and regenerated some old mountain bush-vines of Moscatel. Since then, they have been making MR
and Molino Real from gently dried Mountain Moscatel, but for some time have sought to extend their Malaga activity. A new winery has been built, and—ta-da!—a new dry Moscatel is born.

NEW VINTAGE RELEASE: 2009 Telmo Rodriguez 'El Transistor' Verdejo

Rueda is a special region, renowned for whites – reds and pinks are made but are de-classified as Tierras de Castille y Leon; DO Rueda is reserved for whites alone. These are based on the local variety, Verdejo. For years, Telmo has been talking about wanting to push further with Rueda; experiments ensued, and from 2008 a new wine, sort of a ‘Super Rueda’, was born – El Transistor. The 2009 has now been released and we think it's a ripper!

NEW RELEASE: 2010 Virat Callet Mantonegro

Named after the wild stripy dog of Mallorca, Virat is a joint venture between Miguelangel of Anima Negre and his friend Ana Martin. An absolutely tip top light dry red, screwcap, great package, delicious and very good value, Ladies and Gentlemen, we present …

NEW RELEASE: 2005 Primitivo Quiles 'Raspay' Monastrell

The Primitivo Quiles 'Raspay' is not a typically TSA wine, being very definitely in the rustic old-school oxidatively-handled register – a part of the wine world we are not normally very fond of. There are always exceptions, however, and we think this wine really holds up and has something to say through the rusticity, and it complements and rounds out our Monastrell list nicely.
