Telmo Rodriguez, Tierras de Castille

Tierras de Castille is a catch-all appellation for wines grown outside the borders of existing D.O.s. Telmo's Pegaso vineyard is in the mountain village of Cebreros west of Madrid. The TdC tag can also be used as a de-classification move if one makes wines contrary to the rules of the appellation within which their winery sits.

Telmo discovered this very old vineyard over 15 years ago … by following his nose to the smell of vinegar coming from the old co-op winery at the base of Cebredos. Intrigued, he went for a ramble up to the top and found a wonderful old vineyard of bush-vine Garnacha, which took the form of a "clos", a walled, enclosed distinct vineyard … the wall being sealed by an old bed-spring mattress, as now immortalised on the label. The vineyard was by now uncared-for and un-productive, so Telmo spent 5 years renovating it before releasing his first Pegaso, the 1999.
